Now that fall is almost here the fish are soon to follow. Went Spanish fishing this past weekend with my mom and dad despite small craft advisiories from the hurricane that was east of Bermuda. The seas near the beach were slick calm and we caught some nice Spanish for dinner. Most of the fish were caught on the planners on clark spoons. Its nice to be able to spend a relaxing morning with your parents catching some fish. Come on down, the fishing is already good and is only going to get better as the cooling air temps fire them up for their fall swing. Stay tuned for some pics from today’s and tomorrow’s trips.

Grouper are not the only big bottom fish we’ve been targeting lately. While at home the other day I got the chance to fish the Great Pee Dee River for catfish. If you don’t know your fish geography in North Carolina, the section of river I was fishing is located between Anson and Richmond Counties and well known for producing very large catfish. The abundance of several high protein food sources: mussels, shad, and bream grow these tasty fish to enormous sizes. I was fishing with my cousins Larry and David Purvis from Robbins N.C. We left out one afternoon in search of shad, a cousin to the menhayden, which we use as bait back home at Holden Beach. It wasn’t long before we had enough for a night of fishing.

We were at the fishing area before night fall. It’s better to run in the daylight so you don’t hit any mysterious hard objects. The Pee Dee is a very rocky river so knowing where the big rocks are located is key to keeping your lower unit attached to the motor, if you know what I mean!! We weren’t fishing too long before the cats starting biting. At the end of the evening we had caught around 20 fish, releasing most. Several of the fish were over 30 pounds and two were over 40. We kept one of the big fish and released the others to swim another day. What a great time we had! You don’t have to venture out 40 or 50 miles to catch giant fish, they are right in your backyard.

We have running several 1/2 day Spanish Mackeral and Shark trips this week. The Spanish have been biting real well with double digit catches each day. There are alot of throwback fish mixed in, but the keepers are nice fish. The big sharks have been biting also. Several shrimp boats have been working off of Holden Beach this week, which has the sharks chummed up. The shrimpers throw their by catch off the back and the sharks are ready for the easy meal. This also makes them pretty easy to catch till they all have sore mouths. I’ve got some 3/4 and full day trips lined up the rest of the week, so stay tuned.

Here are some pics from a Spanish Mackeral Trip off of Holden Beach. We had a great crew consisting of Todd and Tracy Stubbs and Lindsay Gardner, all from Bennettsville, S.C. The Spanish were biting pretty good. Most fish were caught on 0 Clark Spoons with green flash. Our inshore trips have been real successful over the past several days. The Spanish that are here now are good filet size and catches are ranging from 30-50 fish daily. Come on down to Holden Beach and lets go fishing!!

Sorry I haven’t made a post in a while, but we have been busy fishing every day. Most of the trips consist of inshore trolling for Spanish Mackeral and drifting for large Sharks off of Holden Beach. These trips have been real successful with numbers ranging from 12-30 Spanish a trip, and a hand full of 50-150 pound Lemon, Blacktip, and Hammerhead sharks each day.
Our 3/4 and full days have consisted of smacking the AJ’s and Grouper with the use of live pogies. These fish are a blast to catch on light tackle and are great eating too. I’ll have some pics up soon!!
If you would like to book an excellent trip with Twister Charters give me a call or email.
